soulja boy - stop kony Soulja Boy

Soulja Boy “Stop Kony”

The irony here is so obvious it’s hardly worth pointing out: Soulja Boy vs. the Child Army. But this song has its merits, however few. For instance, Soulja saying “swag” over Jason Russell’s impassioned pleas at the end is so nihilistic that it’s hard not appreciate the blase attitude. At least when he self-promotes it’s recognizable as such.

“

Let’s say a politician comes up with an ingenious plan that would ensure universal health care while decreasing health care costs.

According to Dunning-Kruger, no matter how much information is provided, the unsophisticated would 1) be incapable of recognizing the wisdom of such a plan; 2) assume they know better; and 3) have no idea of the extent of their inadequacy.

“How can we offer a different view of the city? Where can we find practices and spaces that are less docile, less passive, more creative in their engagement with cities? For myself, this has taken the form of a study of skateboarding. Skateboarding is an activity that is culturally critical, and which above all is performed in direct relation to architecture and urban space. It therefore shows how there might be great potentials in cities and architecture that are as yet largely undreamt of by architects, planners and urban managers.” —Iain Borden, architectural historian and theorist, in a brief essay, “Skateboarders are Essential for our Cities.” A lot of people will tell you that skateboarding is like dance, or art, but it’s not. It’s like this. Via QS.

“There are times when an abortion is necessary. I know that. When you have a black and a white. Or a rape.” —President Richard Nixon, who never fails to amaze. Looking back at his record provides an incredible contrast to the fringe of today’s Republican party. He was grotesquely and outwardly bigoted in a way that Republicans wouldn’t be today regardless of any feelings they may harbor toward minorities, but more progressive than them by a longshot for the fact that he likely believed the Earth to be more than 6,000 years old, and that women who get raped should be able to abort the fetus. Especially if it’s mixed race. Jesus.
